ChatGPT Unblocked: How to Access ChatGPT
Internet
Proxy

When ChatGPT stops working or simply conks out, getting ChatGPT unblocked starts with figuring out what caused the problem in the first place. A school or workplace may restrict access on its network; your current IP address may be the problem; a VPN IP may trigger security checks; or the issue may have nothing to do with your connection at all!

That is why simply switching browsers, changing your IP, or trying another VPN at random can send you in circles. First, identify where the block is coming from. Then you can choose the fix that actually matches the problem.

This guide walks through the main reasons ChatGPT gets blocked and how to access ChatGPT again.

Pro-tip: when the block is network or IP-related

If ChatGPT works on one connection but not another, your network or public IP may be the problem. CyberYozh App proxies (residential, static ISP, and mobile) give you different ways to change or maintain your connection depending on what is causing the block.

TL;DR

  • Getting ChatGPT unblocked starts with finding the cause. The problem may be your network, public IP, VPN, browser, DNS settings, account limits, or ChatGPT itself.

  • Test another trusted connection first. If ChatGPT works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi, your Wi-Fi network or public IP is a strong suspect.

  • A proxy can help when the problem is genuinely IP-related. Residential, static ISP, and mobile proxies provide different ways to replace or maintain your connection.

  • Not every block needs a new IP. School or workplace filters, usage limits, browser issues, incorrect geolocation, and corporate WebSocket restrictions require different fixes.

  • If you use a proxy, prioritise IP quality and stability. Choose an accurately located IP in a ChatGPT-supported location and avoid unnecessary rotation during an active session.

  • For longer ChatGPT sessions, consistency usually makes more sense. A static ISP proxy or a residential proxy with a sticky session can keep the same IP instead of constantly rotating it.

How to get ChatGPT unblocked when the problem is your network or IP

If the tests above point to your network or public IP, the next step is to fix the connection rather than troubleshoot ChatGPT itself.

Sometimes switching networks is enough. In other cases, you may need a different IP, a more reliable location, or an IP that stays consistent throughout your session. Here are the options, starting with the simplest.

1. Switch to a different network

Before changing IPs or paying for a proxy, try another trusted connection. If you are on Wi-Fi, disconnect and open ChatGPT using mobile data or a cellular hotspot instead.

If ChatGPT works on cellular but stops working when you return to Wi-Fi, the original network or its public IP is likely part of the problem. It could be a firewall or DNS restriction, an IP reputation issue, or another network-level filter.

If ChatGPT remains blocked on both connections, changing your IP may not be the answer. Move on to the other troubleshooting steps before assuming the network is responsible.

2. Change your IP address

Every time you connect to ChatGPT, it can see the public IP address your network uses to reach the internet. If that particular IP has been restricted or has a poor reputation, changing it may restore access.

Restarting your browser will not normally help because it does not change your public IP. Switching networks can, and some ISPs assign dynamic IPs that change periodically. A static IP, by contrast, stays the same over time.

A proxy gives you more control by routing your connection through a different IP address. But simply getting another IP is not the whole story. Its source, reputation, location, and stability can all matter. Replacing one problematic or heavily shared IP with another may leave you exactly where you started.

That is why the next question is not just “How do I change my IP?” but “What type of IP should I use?”

3. Use a residential proxy for ChatGPT

If you need to replace a problematic IP, a residential proxy routes your connection through an IP associated with a residential network rather than conventional datacenter infrastructure. This can give the connection a different network profile, while also letting you choose an IP from the location you need.

Residential proxy quality still matters. The IP should have a good reputation and match the location you actually intend to use. A large pool is useful when you need a new IP, but that does not mean you should rotate addresses constantly while logged into ChatGPT.

Rotating residential proxies automatically change the exit IP according to the configured rotation rules. This is useful when the current IP is the problem or when your use case genuinely requires different IPs. For an ongoing ChatGPT session, however, frequent rotation is usually unnecessary. A sticky session is more appropriate when you want to keep the same residential IP for longer and avoid changing your connection halfway through a session.

Pro-tip: Get CyberYozh App's rotating residential proxy with access to 100M residential IPs across 195+ countries, with location targeting and sticky sessions of up to 24 hours. This gives you the option to change the IP when necessary without being forced to rotate it continuously during your ChatGPT session.

4. Use a static ISP proxy when you need the same IP

Changing a problematic IP can help, but once you have a working connection, there is usually little reason to keep changing it. For longer ChatGPT sessions, IP consistency can be more useful than constant rotation.

A static ISP proxy gives you a fixed exit IP that remains the same between requests and sessions. These IPs are associated with ISP networks but hosted on infrastructure designed to provide the stability and availability of a static proxy. This makes them a practical middle ground when you want residential-style network characteristics without rotating through a residential pool.

Pro-tip: Get CyberYozh App Residential ISP Static proxies from $5.29 per month with unlimited traffic, making them the more straightforward option when your priority is a stable IP rather than access to a rotating pool.

Keeping the same IP also means your ChatGPT account is not repeatedly appearing from different addresses during normal use. For browsing, ongoing conversations, research, and other longer sessions, this makes a static ISP proxy a better fit than a rotating residential proxy when rotation serves no particular purpose.

Read more about what an ISP proxy is.

5. Use a mobile proxy when a cellular IP is more appropriate

A mobile proxy routes your connection through an IP associated with a real mobile carrier network, such as LTE or 5G. This gives it a different network profile from residential proxies, which use household broadband connections, and static ISP proxies, which prioritise keeping the same ISP-associated IP.

Mobile proxies can be dedicated or shared. A dedicated mobile proxy gives you exclusive access to the proxy channel, which provides more control and consistency for longer ChatGPT sessions. Shared mobile proxies cost less, but the underlying mobile infrastructure is shared with other users.

They can be useful when you specifically want a cellular-network connection, particularly if you have already found that ChatGPT works over mobile data but your usual network is causing problems. As with any proxy, though, there is little benefit in changing the IP repeatedly during a normal logged-in session when a stable connection is doing the job.

Pro-tip: Get CyberYozh App dedicated LTE/5G mobile proxies from $3.50 per day and shared mobile proxies from $1.70 per day, both with unlimited traffic. This gives you the choice between a private mobile connection and a lower-cost shared option depending on how much control you need.

6. Choose the right proxy location

Choosing a proxy location is not as simple as picking the US because it seems like the safest default. The IP should come from a location where ChatGPT is officially supported and, ideally, remain reasonably consistent with the way you normally use your account.

IP location is determined through geolocation databases, and these databases are not always perfectly accurate. An IP advertised for one country can occasionally be classified differently by another service, which is why checking the reported location before connecting to ChatGPT is worthwhile.

Avoid unnecessary location hopping, too. There is little reason for a normal session to jump between the US, Germany, the UK, and another country simply because your proxy pool allows it. Once you have a suitable working location, consistency is generally the better approach.

There is also an important boundary here. OpenAI states that accessing its services from an unsupported country or territory may result in an account being blocked or suspended.

7. Avoid constant IP rotation during a ChatGPT session

IP rotation is valuable for tasks such as large-scale web scraping and data collection, where distributing requests across different addresses is part of the job. An authenticated ChatGPT session is a different use case. The fact that a proxy can rotate does not mean it should rotate constantly.

If your goal is simply to replace a problematic IP and use ChatGPT normally, changing addresses every few minutes adds little value. Once you have a working IP, keeping the connection consistent is usually the more sensible setup.

With a rotating residential proxy, use a sticky session to hold the same IP for a defined period rather than requesting a new one with every connection. For even longer-term consistency, a static ISP proxy keeps the same exit IP instead of drawing addresses from a rotating pool.

Think of rotation as something to use when the task calls for it, not a feature that needs to be switched on simply because it is available.

8. Avoid low-quality or overused proxy IPs

A different IP is not automatically a better IP. If you replace your current connection with an address that has already been heavily used or associated with abusive traffic, you may run straight into another security check.

This is particularly relevant with heavily shared proxy infrastructure. When many unrelated users send traffic through the same addresses, you have little control over what those IPs were used for before they reached you. Poor reputation or a history of abuse can make an IP more likely to attract scrutiny.

Free web proxies are an even bigger gamble. Beyond unpredictable IP quality and availability, you are routing your traffic through infrastructure you may know very little about. Searching for a “free ChatGPT proxy” may therefore solve one access problem only to introduce reliability, privacy, or security concerns of its own.

If you need a proxy for an IP-related ChatGPT block, look beyond the number of IPs advertised. IP quality score, including source, reputation, location accuracy, and the level of sharing all matter. CyberYozh App is built around cleaner residential and mobile proxy infrastructure, with dedicated options available when you want more control over the connection rather than relying on an unknown shared IP.

ChatGPT connection test across six network setups

To see how ChatGPT behaves across different types of connections, CyberYozh App ran the same access test across six network setups: direct Wi-Fi, direct mobile data, rotating residential, residential with a sticky session, static ISP, and dedicated mobile. The goal was to see whether normal access and response generation changed across direct and proxy-based connections.

How the test was run

The test was conducted in 2026, using six separate connection setups. Direct Wi-Fi and direct mobile data served as the two baseline connections, while the other four profiles used CyberYozh App's rotating residential, residential with a sticky session, static ISP, and dedicated mobile proxies.

Each connection was assigned to a separate browser profile to keep the test environments isolated. Before opening ChatGPT, the public IP, reported location, ISP, and connection type were checked with BrowserLeaks. The same prompt was then submitted to ChatGPT on every connection.

The most interesting: sticky session

The CyberYozh App residential proxy was configured with a 1,440-minute sticky session, or 24 hours rather than rotating with each request. The connection returned a UK IP address, 103.214.45.229, and ChatGPT loaded normally and generated a complete response.

How the other three CyberYozh App proxies performed

The rotating residential proxy returned 80.0.66.18, which BrowserLeaks located in the United Kingdom and associated with Virgin Media.

The static ISP proxy returned 46.151.225.225 in London. BrowserLeaks classified the connection as Corporate/Business, and the main public IP matched the WebRTC public IP reported during the test. ChatGPT responded successfully, with no CAPTCHA encountered during the test.

Finally, the dedicated mobile proxy returned 148.252.129.186, which BrowserLeaks identified as a UK Vodafone Limited cellular connection. ChatGPT again loaded and completed the same prompt without an access restriction appearing during the test.

Key takeaway

ChatGPT generated a complete response across all four CyberYozh App proxy configurations tested: rotating residential, residential with a sticky session, static ISP, and dedicated mobile.

Find the right proxy for ChatGPT

Why is ChatGPT blocked?

The quickest route to getting ChatGPT unblocked is figuring out which type of block you are dealing with. The scenarios below will help narrow it down.

ChatGPT is blocked on your school or university network

Schools and universities can block ChatGPT at the network level, which means the restriction follows the campus Wi-Fi rather than your device or ChatGPT account. You may be able to open ChatGPT normally on mobile data or at home, only to find it unavailable as soon as you connect to the school network.

The restriction can happen in several ways. DNS filtering can prevent ChatGPT domains from resolving correctly, while firewall rules can block connections to OpenAI services altogether. Schools may also use URL or web-content filtering to restrict AI tools as a category. On managed networks and school-owned devices, administrators can apply additional security policies that control which websites and services users are allowed to access.

A quick test is to disconnect from the school Wi-Fi and try ChatGPT over an authorised alternative connection, such as your mobile data. If it works there, but consistently fails on the campus network, the network itself is a strong suspect.

If your school intentionally restricts ChatGPT, check its acceptable-use policy or ask the IT department about approved access. A proxy can change the network route and public IP in some network-related scenarios, but it should not be used to bypass access controls you are not authorised to circumvent.

ChatGPT is blocked on your work Wi-Fi

If ChatGPT works at home or on mobile data but stops loading when you connect to your company Wi-Fi, the office network may be responsible. Businesses often route traffic through corporate firewalls, secure web gateways, DNS filters, or other security tools that decide which websites and online services employees can reach.

The block may be intentional. Some organisations restrict generative AI tools because of data-security, compliance, or acceptable-use policies. But it can also be a configuration issue: ChatGPT may be permitted in principle while one or more domains it depends on are still being filtered.

OpenAI recommends that organisations experiencing network-related ChatGPT errors allowlist the required ChatGPT and OpenAI domains and check whether security software or web filtering is interfering with the connection.

As with a school network, comparing connections is useful. If ChatGPT fails on work Wi-Fi but loads normally on an authorised alternative network, that points towards a network-level restriction rather than a problem with your browser or account. If the restriction is part of company policy, however, the right route is through your IT team rather than trying to bypass it.

Your current IP address has been blocked

Sometimes the problem is not ChatGPT, your account, or your browser. It is the public IP address your connection is using.

Online services use IP reputation as one of many signals when assessing incoming traffic. An IP associated with unusual activity, excessive requests, previous abuse, or a heavily shared network may attract additional security checks or temporary restrictions. This is one reason the problem can appear suddenly even when ChatGPT worked normally on the same device before.

It also explains why changing browsers or clearing your cache may get you nowhere. Those actions change what happens on your device, but your connection can still reach ChatGPT through the same public IP address.

A useful test is to switch temporarily to another trusted network. If ChatGPT works on mobile data but remains blocked on your Wi-Fi, the original network or its public IP becomes a much stronger suspect. From there, changing the IP or using a suitable proxy may help when the restriction is genuinely IP-related.

ChatGPT says “Sorry, you have been blocked”

The Sorry, you have been blocked message is more specific than ChatGPT simply refusing to load. It means the connection has triggered a security block, and the IP address you are using may be part of the problem.

OpenAI notes that this error can occur when Cloudflare blocks an IP address, when a VPN is active, or when traffic appears to come from a suspicious or high-risk location. This can be particularly relevant with VPNs and heavily shared IPs, where many unrelated users may be sending traffic through the same address.

If you see this message, start by turning off your VPN if you are using one and reload ChatGPT. You can also switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see whether the error follows a particular connection. If ChatGPT opens normally after the network changes, that is a useful sign that the original IP or network was contributing to the block.

ChatGPT says “Unusual activity has been detected from your device”

The “Unusual activity has been detected from your device. Try again later” error appears in the ChatGPT iOS app and needs a different troubleshooting path from an ordinary IP block. Changing proxies or cycling through new IPs should not be your first response.

OpenAI recommends starting with the basics: log out and back into the ChatGPT app, uninstall and reinstall it, disable any active VPN, and make sure you are running the latest version from the App Store.

If the error persists, the troubleshooting gets more specific. OpenAI recommends changing your iOS DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, then opening Safari and visiting register.appattest.apple.com. This checks whether your device can reach Apple's App Attest service, which is used for app integrity and device-attestation checks.

Take a screenshot of whatever Safari displays. If the error continues and you contact OpenAI Support, OpenAI specifically asks you to include that screenshot along with confirmation that you tried the previous troubleshooting steps.

The important distinction here is that an “unusual activity” device error should not automatically be treated as a bad-IP problem. Work through the iOS and App Attest checks before reaching for another proxy.

Pro-tip: What Is the Cloudflare Ray ID on a ChatGPT Block Page?

If the “Sorry, you have been blocked” page shows a Cloudflare Ray ID, don't mistake it for the cause of the block. A Ray ID is a unique identifier Cloudflare assigns to a request, which can help trace the specific event during troubleshooting.

You will usually find it near the bottom of the Cloudflare error page, alongside other information about the request. If you need to contact OpenAI Support, take a screenshot of the entire error page and keep the Ray ID visible. It gives the support team a more precise reference for investigating what happened.

The useful clue for you is not the Ray ID itself, but whether the error follows the connection. If the block disappears when you disable a VPN or switch from Wi-Fi to another trusted network, that points more strongly towards the original network or IP.

If you need a different connection, the source, reputation, location, and stability of the new IP matter too. We will look at those differences when comparing residential, ISP, and mobile proxies below.

Your VPN is causing ChatGPT to block your connection

There is a slightly frustrating scenario where you turn on a VPN to access ChatGPT, only for the VPN itself to become the reason you cannot get in.

VPN services typically route many users through a limited pool of IP addresses. If one of those IPs has accumulated a poor reputation, generated unusual traffic, or is simply being used by too many people at once, it may attract additional security checks. OpenAI also recommends disabling VPNs when troubleshooting certain access and blocking errors.

This is where the source and quality of the IP matter as much as changing it. Moving from your normal connection to another heavily shared VPN IP may simply swap one problem for another.

If ChatGPT works when the VPN is switched off, you have a fairly good clue. If you still need an alternative IP for a legitimate network-related reason, a residential, static ISP, or mobile proxy gives you more control over the type of connection and, depending on the service, its location and session behaviour. We will break down those options further below.

Learn more about proxy vs. VPN.

ChatGPT works on mobile data but not Wi-Fi

If ChatGPT refuses to work on Wi-Fi but opens as soon as you switch to mobile data, you have already learned something useful: ChatGPT itself is probably not the problem.

Both connections use the same device, browser, and ChatGPT account, but they take different network paths and use different public IP addresses. The issue may therefore sit with your Wi-Fi network, its firewall or DNS settings, your ISP, or the public IP assigned to that connection. OpenAI recommends comparing Wi-Fi with a cellular hotspot when diagnosing network-related ChatGPT problems for exactly this reason.

Try the test in both directions. Open ChatGPT on Wi-Fi, switch Wi-Fi off and try again using cellular data, then reconnect to Wi-Fi. If the problem consistently returns with the same network, there is little point in repeatedly clearing cookies or changing browsers before investigating the connection itself.

This does not automatically mean you need a proxy. But if the problem is eventually traced to the network route or public IP, changing the connection or using an appropriate proxy becomes a relevant next step.

ChatGPT thinks you are in the wrong location

Sometimes you are physically in a country where ChatGPT is supported, yet the service appears to think otherwise. One possible reason is incorrect IP geolocation: the location associated with your public IP does not always match where you are actually connecting from.

This can happen after an ISP reallocates an IP range, when geolocation databases contain outdated information, or when a VPN or proxy exits through a different country than expected. The result can be an unsupported-location message even though your real location should not prevent you from using ChatGPT.

First, check the location reported for your current public IP and disable any VPN or proxy that could be changing it. Trying another trusted connection, such as mobile data, can also help isolate the problem. If ChatGPT works there, your original IP or network route may be reporting the wrong location.

If you need an alternative connection, a proxy with reliable country or city-level targeting can give you more control over where the IP is actually located. This is different from using a proxy to access ChatGPT from a country OpenAI does not support. We will address unsupported countries separately, as OpenAI's availability policies still apply regardless of the connection you use.

Residential vs ISP vs mobile proxies for ChatGPT

There is no single “best proxy for ChatGPT” for every situation. The right choice depends on whether you need to replace an IP occasionally, keep one address for longer sessions, or specifically use a mobile-network connection.

Proxy type

Best suited to

IP behaviour

Main consideration

Rotating residential

Changing residential IPs when needed

Rotating or sticky

Use sticky sessions when you do not need frequent rotation

Static ISP

Consistent, longer ChatGPT sessions

Same IP

Best fit when IP stability is the priority

Dedicated mobile

A private cellular-network connection

Dedicated with controlled rotation

More control over the mobile connection

Shared mobile

Lower-cost access to mobile infrastructure

Shared mobile channel

Less control than a dedicated option

Which proxy should You choose?

The decision is fairly straightforward:

  • Need a new residential IP and flexibility to change it? Choose a rotating residential proxy and use a sticky session when you want to hold the same IP.

  • Need one consistent IP for regular or longer ChatGPT sessions? A static ISP proxy is the simpler fit.

  • Need a cellular-network IP with greater control over the connection? Choose a dedicated mobile proxy.

  • Want mobile infrastructure at a lower cost? A shared mobile proxy may be enough.

CyberYozh App offers all four options in one place: rotating residential proxies across 195+ countries, static ISP proxies with unlimited traffic, and dedicated or shared LTE/5G mobile proxies. This means you can choose the connection based on the actual cause of the access problem rather than trying to make one proxy type fit every situation.

How to set up a Proxy to access ChatGPT

Once you have chosen the right proxy type, you will normally receive a host or IP address, port, username, and password from your provider. How you enter those details depends on the device and browser you use.

Configure a proxy in your browser

Some browsers can use proxy extensions or third-party proxy managers, while others rely on your operating system's network settings. This is useful when you want the proxy to affect browser traffic without changing how every application on the device connects.

Enter the proxy credentials supplied by your provider, select the correct protocol, and save the profile. If authentication is required, you may be asked for your username and password when the connection starts.

Read more about how to configure a proxy on your operating system.

Configure a proxy on windows

Windows has built-in proxy settings:

  1. Open Settings.

  2. Go to Network & internet > Proxy.

  3. Under Manual proxy setup, select Set up next to Use a proxy server.

  4. Turn Use a proxy server on.

  5. Enter the proxy IP address and port.

  6. Save the settings.

Windows also supports automatic proxy detection and setup scripts when those are provided instead.

Configure a proxy on macOS

On a Mac:

  1. Open System Settings > Network.

  2. Select your active network connection and click Details.

  3. Open Proxies.

  4. Select the appropriate proxy protocol, such as HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKS.

  5. Enter the server address and port.

  6. If required, enable authentication and enter your username and password.

  7. Save the configuration.

macOS supports HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS proxy configurations directly from its network settings.

Configure a proxy on Android

On Android, manual proxy configuration is generally available within the settings for the Wi-Fi network you are connected to. Open the network's advanced settings, find Proxy, switch from None to Manual, and enter the hostname and port provided by your proxy service.

The exact menu names can vary between Android versions and device manufacturers. Also check whether your proxy requires username/password authentication and whether your particular Android setup supports it directly.

Configure a proxy on iPhone

On an iPhone, proxy settings are attached to the individual Wi-Fi network:

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi.

  2. Tap the information button next to your connected network.

  3. Find the HTTP proxy settings.

  4. Choose Manual.

  5. Enter the proxy server and port.

  6. Add authentication credentials if required.

  7. Save the configuration.

This means the configuration applies to that Wi-Fi connection rather than automatically following you across every network. Apple also supports managed global HTTP proxy configurations for organisation-managed devices.

Test your IP before opening ChatGPT

Do not assume the proxy is working simply because you entered the credentials without an error.

Open an IP-checking service and verify three things: your public IP has changed, the reported country or region is correct, and the connection is stable. If your original IP still appears, troubleshoot the proxy configuration before opening ChatGPT.

This is also a good moment to catch an incorrectly geolocated IP rather than discovering the problem after logging in.

Check the fraud score and reported location of your IP.

Connect to ChatGPT and check that everything works

Once the new IP is confirmed, open ChatGPT and sign in normally. Test a conversation and make sure responses load without connection errors or unexpected interruptions.

If ChatGPT now works, avoid changing a connection that is already doing its job. Keep the same static IP or sticky session where appropriate instead of rotating through new addresses unnecessarily.

If the block remains, do not keep cycling through proxies blindly. The problem may not be IP-related at all. The troubleshooting steps in the next section cover browser, DNS, VPN, service-status, and other causes that changing your IP will not necessarily fix.

ChatGPT still blocked? Try these fixes before changing your IP again

Not every ChatGPT block is an IP problem. If switching networks or using a different, working IP does not restore access, stop changing the connection for a moment. The cause may be sitting in your browser, DNS settings, VPN, account, or ChatGPT itself.

Work through the checks below before assuming you need yet another IP.

Check whether ChatGPT is down

Before changing anything else, check the official OpenAI status page. If ChatGPT is experiencing a widespread outage, changing your IP, browser, DNS, or proxy will not solve it. In that case, the only real fix is to wait until the service recovers.

Clear ChatGPT cookies and cache

Old or corrupted browser data can interfere with authentication or prevent ChatGPT from loading correctly. Clear the cookies and cached data associated with ChatGPT, close the browser, reopen it, and try signing in again.

You do not necessarily need to wipe your entire browsing history. Start with site data related to ChatGPT and OpenAI.

Try incognito mode or another browser

Opening ChatGPT in an incognito or private window gives you a quick way to test the browser without relying on your existing cookies and much of its stored site data.

If ChatGPT works in private mode but not in your normal browser window, the problem is more likely to be local to the browser than your IP. Trying another up-to-date browser can help confirm that.

Disable browser extensions temporarily

Ad blockers, privacy extensions, script blockers, security tools, and other browser add-ons can interfere with pages or authentication flows.

Temporarily disable your extensions and reload ChatGPT. If that fixes the problem, turn them back on one at a time until you identify the one causing the conflict.

Turn off your VPN

If you are already connected through a VPN, switch it off and try ChatGPT using your normal connection. OpenAI specifically recommends disabling VPNs when troubleshooting the “Sorry, you have been blocked” error.

If ChatGPT immediately starts working, the VPN connection or its exit IP was likely contributing to the problem. Rather than repeatedly switching between random VPN servers, decide whether you actually need an alternative IP and, if so, use one appropriate for your situation.

Check your DNS settings

DNS is responsible for translating domain names such as ChatGPT's into the addresses your device needs to reach them. Incorrect DNS settings, filtering, or a problem with your DNS provider can therefore make ChatGPT inaccessible even when your internet connection otherwise appears normal.

Try switching back to your network's default DNS settings if you have changed them manually. On a managed school or work network, however, DNS filtering may be intentional, so check with the administrator rather than changing managed settings yourself.

Ask your school or workplace to allowlist ChatGPT

If you are supposed to have access to ChatGPT but it is being caught by a school or corporate network filter, ask the IT administrator to check the network configuration.

OpenAI publishes a list of domains that organisations may need to allowlist for ChatGPT to function correctly, including *.chatgpt.com and *.openai.com, along with authentication and supporting domains. This is a better solution than trying to work around the network when ChatGPT is legitimately required for work or study.

OpenAI publishes the list of domains organisations may need to allowlist

Contact OpenAI support

If ChatGPT remains inaccessible after you have tested another network, browser, private window, VPN settings, and other likely causes, it may be time to contact OpenAI Support.

Include the exact error message, when the problem started, the troubleshooting steps you have already tried, and whether the issue occurs across different devices or networks. Screenshots can also help. The more clearly you isolate the problem beforehand, the less time you are likely to spend repeating basic troubleshooting steps.

Expert’s insight: check whether you have hit a usage limit

Not every stop is a block. If you have been sending a lot of messages, generating images, or using a particular model or feature heavily, you may simply have reached a usage limit on your plan. ChatGPT may tell you which model or feature is affected and, where applicable, when access becomes available again.

The distinction matters because the symptoms can feel similar, but the solutions are completely different. A usage limit is tied to your account or plan, not your IP address. Switching networks, clearing cookies, or using a proxy will not lift it.

Depending on the limit, your options may be to wait for it to reset, use another model or feature that remains available to you, or move to a plan with different usage limits.
