Setting up a Proxy on Windows

Windows — is the most popular OS in the world, and it is where most online work is conducted. Setting up a proxy at the system level allows you to reroute traffic from all applications (browsers, messengers, games) through a secure channel.

This is necessary to ensure online privacy, protect data on public networks, and optimize connection routing.

However, Windows has its own nuances: system settings work perfectly with HTTP proxies, but SOCKS5 often requires "dancing with a tambourine" (extra effort). In this guide, we will break down which proxy to choose and how to configure it correctly depending on the protocol.

Part 1. Strategy: Which proxy do you need for Windows?

Before diving into the settings, choose the right proxy.

1. Datacenter Proxies — For content and gaming

  • What they are: High-speed IPs from data centers.
  • Purpose: Optimizing connection speeds for streaming platforms (YouTube, Netflix), fast file transfers, and accessing international resources.
  • Pros: High speed and low price.

2. Residential Proxies (ISP) — For work and shopping

  • What they are: IP addresses from home internet service providers.
  • Purpose: Remote work (accessing corporate resources), shopping on foreign websites, account registration.
  • Why: This provides a reliable connection with a high level of trust through standard ISPs.

3. Mobile Proxies (4G/5G) — For SMM

  • What they are: IPs from cellular operators.
  • Purpose: Professional social media management, SMM campaigns, and managing corporate business profiles.
  • Why: Provides high connection stability and reliable access when working with platforms like Facebook or Instagram.

Part 2. Data Preparation

For stable operation, we recommend using private channels from CyberYozh App.

After purchase, you will receive:

  • IP (Host): 172.98.60.180
  • Port: 58763
  • Login / Password: Authorization data.

Critically important: If you are configuring the proxy through the standard Windows menu (Method 1), use HTTP/HTTPS.

Part 3. Method 1: System Configuration (For HTTP/HTTPS)

This method will reroute traffic from browsers (Chrome, Edge, Opera) and most programs.

Step 1. Navigate to Settings

  1. Click StartSettings (gear icon).
  2. Go to Network & InternetProxy.

Step 2. Entering Data

  1. Find the "Manual proxy setup" section.
  2. Click the "Use a proxy server" button (On).
  3. Fill in the fields:
  4. Address: Proxy IP.
  5. Port: Proxy port.
  6. In the "Do not use for" field, enter local addresses if needed.
  7. Click "Save".

Additional configuration via Control Panel

If you are using an older version of Windows or prefer the classic interface:

Open Control Panel → Network and Internet → Internet Options.

Go to the Connections tab and click LAN settings.

Fig. 4. "LAN Settings" dialog box in Windows, demonstrating proxy server configuration parameters. The interface contains options for automatic proxy configuration and manual entry of proxy server data, including fields for IP address and port.

Check the box "Use a proxy server for your LAN".

Enter the IP address and port.

Fig. 5. Windows proxy server setup dialog box showing the result of a successful connection parameter set. The window displays the filled-in IP address and port fields, as well as the activated "Use a proxy server" checkbox for applying the settings.

Click Advanced if you want to set different proxies for HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, and SOCKS protocols.

Fig. 6. "Proxy Settings" advanced dialog box in Windows, demonstrating extended settings for various types of proxy connections (HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SOCKS). The window contains separate fields for specifying proxy servers by protocol and a section for adding exceptions.

Here you can also specify exceptions — website addresses that will open directly, bypassing the proxy (e.g., google.com).

Step 3. Authorization

Open any browser (Edge, Chrome) and try to visit a website. A system window will appear.

  • Enter the Username and Password for the proxy.
  • Click Log In.

Part 4. Method 2: Configuration via Proxifier (For SOCKS5 and Gamers)

If you need SOCKS5 (for Telegram, Discord, games) or if you want to route only one specific program through the proxy, system settings will not suffice. You need a proxying tool like Proxifier.

  1. Install Proxifier.
  2. Click ProfileProxy Servers -> Add.
  3. Enter IP, Port (SOCKS5), select the protocol SOCKS Version 5, and enter Login/Password.
  4. Click Check. If OK — save.
  5. Go to ProfileProxification Rules and configure which programs should go through the proxy (e.g., only telegram.exe).

This method is much more flexible and reliable than the standard one.

You can read a detailed instruction on setting up a proxy in Proxifier at this link.

Part 5. Anonymity Check

Whichever method you choose, verify the result. Go to whoer.net or browserleaks.com/ip.

What to look for:

  • Has the IP address changed?
  • Does the country match?
  • Are there any DNS leaks?

Fig. 8. Information panel displaying technical connection characteristics, including IP address, geolocation, and other network connection parameters, allowing the user to verify the correctness of the proxy server configuration.

If everything is in order — your Windows is protected.

Conclusion

Windows provides the basics, but serious tasks require specialized software.

  • For web surfing, use system settings and HTTP proxies.
  • For games and messengers, use Proxifier and SOCKS5 proxies.

You can find reliable channels for any protocol in the CyberYozh App catalog.
